You can change when and how you’re prompted to unlock 1Password, along with how often 1Password will lock by managing your settings. Your unlock and auto-lock settings aren’t synced between devices, so you can use your preferred settings on each one.
Manage unlock and auto-lock in the 1Password apps
To manage your unlock and auto-lock settings:
- Open and unlock 1Password.
- Select your account or collection at the top of the sidebar, then select Settings > Security.
You’ll find these settings and options:
- App unlock preset: Select Security review to view presets that will automatically configure the following settings. You can preview changes before you select a preset or choose to keep your existing settings.
- Unlock using Touch ID or Apple Watch: 1Password will prompt you to use Touch ID or your Apple Watch to unlock.
- Unlock app with Mac password: If you have unlock using Touch ID or Apple Watch turned on, you can also unlock 1Password with your Mac login password.
- Require account password: The amount of time before you’re asked to enter your password again.
- Unlock when device unlocks: 1Password will automatically unlock when you unlock your Mac.
- Ask to unlock again: The amount of time before you’re required to unlock 1Password separately from your Mac.
- Lock when device locks or sleeps: 1Password will lock when your Mac or display sleeps or when you switch users on your Mac.
- Lock after the device is idle for: 1Password will lock when there’s no keyboard, mouse, or trackpad activity on your Mac for the specified amount of time.
When 1Password automatically locks, Quick Access also locks.
To manage your unlock and auto-lock settings:
- Open and unlock 1Password.
- Select the icon for your account or collection at the top left, then select Settings > Security.
If you’re using an iPad, tap your account or collection at the top of the sidebar.
You’ll find these settings and options:
- App unlock preset: Select this to view presets that will automatically configure the following settings. You can preview changes before you select a preset or choose to keep your existing settings.
- Unlock using Face ID or Touch ID: 1Password will prompt you to use Face ID or Touch ID to unlock.
- Unlock with device passcode: If you have unlock using Touch ID or Face ID turned on, you can also unlock 1Password with your device passcode.
- Require account password: The amount of time before you’re asked to enter your password again.
- Unlock when device unlocks: 1Password will automatically unlock when you unlock your iPhone or iPad.
- Ask to unlock again: The amount of time before you’re required to unlock 1Password separately from your iPhone or iPad.
- Lock when device locks: 1Password will lock when your iPhone or iPad device locks.
- Auto-lock on exit: Select this to choose the amount of time until 1Password will lock after you leave the app.

To manage your unlock and auto-lock settings:
- Open and unlock 1Password.
- Select your account or collection at the top of the sidebar, then select Settings > Security.
You’ll find these settings and options:
- App unlock preset: Select Security review to view presets that will automatically configure the following settings. You can preview changes before you select a preset or choose to keep your existing settings.
- Unlock using Windows Hello: 1Password will prompt you to use Windows Hello to unlock.
- Require account password: The amount of time before you’ll be asked to enter your password again.
This option appears when you turn on “Use your device’s Trusted Platform Module to unlock”.
- Require account password: The amount of time before you’ll be asked to enter your password again.
- Unlock when device unlocks: 1Password will automatically unlock when you unlock your PC.
- Ask to unlock again: The amount of time before you’re required to unlock 1Password separately from your PC.
- Show Windows Hello prompt automatically: If you’ve turned on unlock using Windows Hello, you can choose to make the Windows Hello prompt appear automatically.
- Use your device’s Trusted Platform Module to unlock: If you’ve turned unlock using Windows Hello, you can use your Trusted Platform Module to avoid entering your password after you quit 1Password or restart your PC.
- Lock when device locks or sleeps: 1Password will lock when your PC or display sleeps or when you switch users on your PC.
- Lock after the device is idle for: 1Password will lock when there’s no keyboard, mouse, or trackpad activity on your PC for the specified amount of time.
When 1Password automatically locks, Quick Access also locks.

- Unlock when device unlocks: 1Password will automatically unlock when you unlock your device.
- Ask to unlock again: The amount of time before you’re required to unlock 1Password separately from your device.
- Lock when device locks: 1Password will lock when your device locks.
- Auto-lock on exit: Select this to choose the amount of time until 1Password will lock after you leave the app.
To manage your unlock and auto-lock settings:
- Open and unlock 1Password.
- Select your account or collection at the top of the sidebar, then select Settings > Security.
You’ll find these settings and options:
- Unlock using system authentication service: 1Password will prompt you to use system authentication to unlock.
- Lock after the computer is idle: 1Password will lock when there’s no keyboard, mouse, or trackpad activity on your computer for the specified amount of time.
- Lock when computer locks: 1Password will lock when your computer locks.
- Allow 1Password to prevent your device from sleeping: 1Password will prevent your computer from sleeping while you view fields with Large Type.
When 1Password automatically locks, Quick Access also locks.
Manage unlock and auto-lock in the browser extension
Tip
If you have “Integrate this extension with the 1Password desktop app” turned on, you can manage your lock and unlock settings in the 1Password apps.
To manage your unlock and auto-lock settings:
- Select
in your browser’s toolbar.
- Select the account menu in the top left corner of the pop-up and choose Settings.
- Select Security.
You’ll find these settings and options:
- Unlock using Touch ID: In Safari on a Mac, you can choose to unlock 1Password with Touch ID, even if you don’t have the 1Password desktop app.
- App unlock preset: Choose a preset that will automatically configure the following settings.
- Automatically lock 1Password: 1Password will automatically lock depending on your choices in the following settings.
- Lock after system is idle for: 1Password will lock when there’s no keyboard, mouse, or trackpad activity on your computer for the specified number of minutes.
- Lock when device goes to sleep: 1Password will lock when your computer or display sleeps.
When you quit your browser, 1Password will always lock.
Manage auto-lock settings on 1Password.com
To manage your auto-lock settings:
- Sign in to your account on 1Password.com.
- Select your name in the top right and choose Manage Account.
- Select the gear button next to Auto-Lock and adjust the amount of time before 1Password locks automatically.
You can specify a different number of minutes for each browser you use.

If you unlock with SSO and aren’t prompted to use your preferred unlock method, you may need to unlock 1Password more often than the duration you’ve chosen in Settings > Security. You can reach out to your team administrator for more information.
