Use your device password or passcode to unlock 1Password

Learn how to set up and use your device password or passcode to unlock 1Password on your Mac, iPhone, iPad, or Android device.

Tip

You can also choose to unlock 1Password when your device unlocks, as well as with Touch ID or Apple Watch on Mac, Face ID or Touch ID on iPhone or iPad, and your fingerprint, face, or iris on Android.

Set up password or passcode unlock

Important

Before you turn on password or passcode unlock, make sure your device password or passcode is strong and difficult to guess. You should also change it regularly, such as every 3 to 6 months.

Important

If you’re signed in to a business account in the 1Password app, you won’t see the option to unlock when your Mac password at this time. 1Password Business customers will be able to control this setting with policy controls at a later time.

Before you begin, make sure you have a password set up on your Mac, then make sure Unlock using Touch ID is turned on.

  1. Open and unlock the 1Password app.
  2. Select your account or collection at the top of the sidebar, then select Settings.
  3. Select Security, then turn on Unlock with Mac password.

The next time you unlock 1Password, you’ll be asked for your account password, then you’ll be able to unlock with your Mac login password when you’re prompted to unlock with Touch ID.

Before you begin, make sure you have a passcode set up on your iPhone or iPad , then make sure Unlock using Touch ID or Face ID is turned on.

  1. Open and unlock the 1Password app.
  2. Select the icon for your account or collection at the top left, then select Settings.

    If you’re using an iPad, select your account or collection at the top of the sidebar.

  3. Select Security, then turn on Unlock with device passcode.

    Get help if you don’t want to use Touch ID in 1Password.

The next time you unlock 1Password, you’ll be asked for your account password, then you’ll be able to unlock with your device passcode.

Before you begin, make sure you have a passcode, PIN, or pattern set up on your Android device.

  1. Open and unlock the 1Password app.
  2. Tap the icon for your account or collection at the top right and choose Settings.

    If you’re using an tablet, tap your account or collection at the top of the sidebar.

  3. Select Security, then turn on Unlock with device passcode.

The next time you unlock 1Password, you’ll be asked for your account password, then you’ll be able to unlock with your device passcode.

Get help

If you’ve set up Touch ID on your iPhone or iPad , you’ll only be able to unlock with your passcode when Touch ID fails. If you want 1Password to prompt you for your passcode by default, you’ll need to turn off Touch ID entirely.

Sometimes, you’ll need to enter your account password instead of your device password or passcode:

  • If your device password or passcode isn’t recognized five times in a row
  • If the amount of time in Settings > Security > “Require account password” has elapsed
  • If you change your device password or passcode
