Migrate team members from a parent account to a child account

Learn how to migrate team members from your parent account to a child account in multi-tenancy.

With 1Password Enterprise Password Manager, you can set up and manage 1Password for your company and sub-companies. When you’re ready to migrate team members to a new child account, follow the steps below.

Before you begin

Before you can migrate team members to a child account, make sure your accounts are set up:

Important

Migration is not reversible. When you’re ready to migrate, run a test with a small, representative set of team members to confirm everything works as expected.

Step 1: Notify team members

Create a custom group in your parent account for team members who you want to migrate, then add team members to the group.

Use the following template to notify team members at least two weeks before migration. Replace [Company Name] with your company name.

Your 1Password account will move to [Company Name] on [DATE].

What this means for you:

  • You’ll get an email from 1Password on the day of migration.
  • Your free family account is unaffected by migration.

No action is required until you receive your migration email.

Step 2: Migrate team member accounts

When you’re ready to migrate team members:

  1. Sign in to your account on 1Password.com.
  2. Select Child accounts in the sidebar.
  3. Select the child account you want to migrate people to.
  4. Select Migrate people.
  5. Select team members or groups you want to migrate.

When you migrate a group, only the team members in it will be migrated to the child account. You'll need to create new groups in the child account and add people to those groups.

  6. Review and confirm the people you want to migrate. They’ll be sent an email to start the migration.

After team members have completed the migration, launch into the target child account and confirm the new team members to complete their migration. Until confirmed, they won’t be able to access shared vaults in the new account.

Next steps

After you migrate team members, their status in the parent account will change to “Migrated”. They won’t be able to sign in to the parent account, but their accounts are not automatically deleted.

You can now grant access to shared vaults and organize your team members into groups in the new child account.
