About the outage
On February 5th, 2024, 1Password.com became partially unavailable for a short period of time. This wasn’t a result of a security incident, and customer data wasn’t affected. A high-traffic event, in a short period of time, reduced performance in the primary datastore in our US region. This caused downstream effects to our SaaS services. As a result, the 1Password server-side application became degraded and served about 50% of incoming traffic in the US region. As a result of this incident, we’ve increased our capacity to better service unexpected traffic spikes.
What was affected
For customers with accounts in the US region (1Password.com):
- Changes made to items might not have synced between devices. These items would’ve synced after the issue was fully resolved.
- 1Password.com was unavailable for signing in, account administration and new sign-ups.
- 1Password CLI was unavailable for single sign-on, account administration, and new sign-ups.
What you should know
1Password is designed to be resilient in the event of a service outage and to protect your information. Local copies of vault data are always available on your devices, even without a connection to the 1Password service or the internet itself. As a result, your passwords and other vault items remain safe and sound. During any outage, customers who don’t unlock with SSO can continue to unlock and use the 1Password apps even when a connection can’t be made to the server.
During an outage, you can still use the 1Password apps to:
- View and edit data already on your devices.
- Create new items.
- Fill usernames and passwords.
Any changes you made to items will sync when the service is available.
What we’re doing
We take the integrity of your data and the stability of our systems very seriously, and we will continue to work hard every day to earn the trust you’ve placed in us.
To mitigate the issue, we’ve upgraded our database systems to provide more resilience in case of high traffic patterns.
We’re currently working to improve our processes around capacity planning and forecasting.
