About the outage
On January 16, 2023, 1Password.com became unavailable for a short period of time. A database query on the 1Password.com servers triggered a bug in the database engine provided to us by our cloud provider. This bug put the database in a failure state. As a result of this incident, the cloud provider has acknowledged and confirmed this defect and committed to provide a fix in a future version.
What was affected
During the short period of downtime, changes made to items didn’t sync between devices and the web app was unavailable for account administration and new sign-ups.
What you should know
1Password is designed to be resilient in the event of a service outage. During any outage, you can continue to unlock and use the apps even when a connection can’t be made to the server. During an outage, you can still:
- View and edit data already on your devices.
- Create new items.
- Fill usernames and passwords.
Any changes you make to items will sync when service is available.
What we’re doing
To mitigate the issue, we have:
- Temporarily stopped using this query.
- Changed the configuration of the database so this bug will cause the query to fail, rather than trigger a database-wide failure.
We will upgrade our database when the cloud provider releases the new version with the fix.
