When you add a location to an item, 1Password can automatically display that item in the mobile app when you’re nearby. By proactively surfacing items when and where you need them most, 1Password can spare you repeated searches and save you valuable time.
Security design
You can choose to add a location to an item. Your location information isn’t recorded or used for any other purpose.
1Password stores the location data in a single field added to your 1Password item. The field is stored in the item overview and encrypted along with it. Only you can access the information.
Privacy considerations
You can choose to use third-party maps to add location data to your items. This feature is turned off by default. If you choose to use third-party maps, the map provider(s) may be able to collect certain data based on your requests:
- Your IP address
- Your location(s) of interest
- The fact that 1Password (the application) is making a request
It’s possible a map provider could use this information to determine that a specific location is relevant to a customer of 1Password.
1Password explored the use of a proxy server to mitigate this concern and ultimately dismissed it as a possibility. A proxy server wouldn’t eliminate the issue, and would put 1Password in a position to collect the information as well. Instead, 1Password made maps an opt-in feature and included in-app messaging to advise customers of the privacy considerations.
