Generating a password
We’ve all heard the advice: good password hygiene requires that all passwords should be unique, long, and hard to guess. It can be hard to come up with passwords like that, though. That's why 1Password for iOS was designed to help you create new, hard-to-crack passwords you don’t have to memorize. All you have to do is use our built-in password generator, which you can find in any item with a Password field.
Note: If you need help updating your password on a website, please see Changing a saved password before you generate a new one!
When viewing an item’s details, tap Edit in the upper right corner.

Tap Generate New Password below the password field.

Pick the type of password you'd like to create. The default is a random mix of letters, numbers, and special characters. However, you can also create a password made up of random words (often called diceware) by swiping left to the wordlist generator.
Diceware passwords are helpful when you want a password you can memorize. They are also handy for creating fake security answers you may have to give over the phone!

If you want a random password
Use the Length slider to change how long your password is.

Tip: Notice that colored bar right under the password? That’s the strength meter! To help increase your password's security, make sure the bar below it is green rather than yellow or red.
Customize your your password by adjusting the options:
- The Digits slider controls how many numbers appear in your password.
- The Symbols slider controls how many symbols (like #?@*$+=) appear in your password.
- Avoid ambiguity, when switched on, will prevent characters that look like other characters from being used in your generated password. Examples of ambiguous characters are “0” and “O” as well as “l”, “1”, and “I”.
Allow repeats, when switched on, will allow the generator to create a password where the same character appears more than once.

- Tap Done in the upper right corner of the screen when you’re happy with your new password!
If you want a wordlist password
- Use the Words slider to select how many words will be in your password.
If you'd like to change how the words are separated, tap Separated with, then tap the character you'd prefer.
