Deploy the 1Password browser extension in a virtualized environment (VDI)

Learn how to deploy the 1Password browser extension in a virtualized environment.

To deploy the 1Password browser extension in a virtualized environment, you’ll need to make sure its local data is preserved between sessions. This will allow your users to unlock 1Password without having to sign in to their account every time, which saves team administrators time spent recovering accounts.

Before you begin, follow the steps to deploy 1Password in the browser for your team.

Persist browser extension storage

In your management software, set up persistence for the folder where browser profile data is stored. To find the folder, visit the relevant page below in your browser in the VDI, then look for the relevant field:

BrowserPageField name
Bravebrave://versionProfile Path
Chromechrome://versionProfile Path
Edgeedge://versionProfile Path
Firefoxabout:profilesRoot Directory

When you persist browser extension storage and your team unlocks 1Password with a Secret Key and account password, you should consider the following:

  • Make sure team members save their Emergency Kit so they have their Secret Key and account password if they need it to sign in again. If you turned off Emergency Kits for your team, make sure they sign in on a second device so they can get their account details there.
  • If you deploy the 1Password desktop app, you don’t need to persist browser extension storage. The app will automatically keep the account active in the browser extension.

If your team unlocks with SSO

For the most convenient access to 1Password, we recommend that VDI users unlock 1Password with an account password instead of SSO. If the rest of your organization uses SSO, you can create a custom group for VDI users and exclude them from unlocking with SSO.

If your entire team needs to unlock with SSO, we recommend that users install 1Password on a mobile device so they have a second linked app. Then, if the browser extension device key is unavailable, the mobile app can be used to verify and enroll the browser extension again.

With the mobile app, your team members can use a QR code to sign in:

  1. Open 1Password on a mobile device where you’re signed in.
  2. Select the account icon or 1Password logo in the top corner.
  3. Select Scan QR Code, then follow the onscreen instructions.
