How to use the WLAN server

You can sync your Mac with your iOS or Android devices over a local wireless network.

Tip

If you want your data on all your devices, there’s an easier way to sync 1Password.

If you don’t want the benefits of a 1Password membership and don’t want your data to leave your local network because of personal preference or corporate requirement, you can sync your Mac with your iOS or Android devices using the WLAN server.

Notes:

  • The WLAN server can’t sync a mobile device to multiple computers.
  • The WLAN server can’t sync two or more computers.
  • The WLAN server can’t sync two or more mobile devices directly.
  • The WLAN server requires 1Password 7 or earlier on all your devices, and 1Password 6 or earlier on Windows.

Follow the steps below to set up the WLAN server on your computer and sync your mobile devices.

  1. Open and unlock 1Password.
  2. Choose 1Password > Settings or Preferences.
  3. Click the WLAN Server icon and turn on Run a WLAN server from this Mac to sync with iOS and Android devices.

If you have multiple vaults, you can choose which ones to include. Your Primary vault is always included.

Then follow the steps to sync your iOS or Android device.

Follow the steps for your Mac. If you’re opening 1Password for the first time, scroll down and tap WLAN Server, then follow the onscreen instructions. If you see “1Password would like to find and connect to devices on your local network,” tap OK.

If you’ve already set up 1Password:

  1. Open and unlock 1Password.
  2. Tap Settings > Sync > Primary.
  3. Tap Start Syncing, then tap Sync with WLAN server.
  4. Tap the name of your computer, then tap Secret.
  5. Enter the secret code shown on your computer, then tap Sync Now.
  6. Enter your password.

Your data will begin syncing.

To sync your data

To sync your data in the future, unlock 1Password on both your Mac and your iOS device while they’re on the same wireless network. Your data will automatically sync.

Follow the steps for your Mac. When you first set up 1Password on your Android device:

  1. On the 1Password Welcome screen, tap WLAN server.
  2. Tap the name of your computer.
  3. Enter the secret code shown on your computer, then tap Start sync.
  4. Enter your password.

Your data will begin syncing.

To sync your data

To sync your data in the future, unlock 1Password on both your Mac and your Android device while they’re on the same wireless network.

In 1Password on your Android device, pull to refresh while viewing your data, or tap the ellipsis > Sync.

Get help

If you’re using iOS 14 or later on your iPhone or iPad, open the Settings app and tap 1Password. Make sure Local Network is turned on.
