Recovery Codes (beta)

You can use a recovery code to regain access to your account if you're locked out of 1Password.

Tip

Recovery code generation is currently limited to individual accounts using the beta version of the 1Password apps. To create a recovery code for your account, switch to the beta release of 1Password: Use 1Password beta releases

When you generate a recovery code:

  • Your sign-in details will stay the same. The recovery code serves as a backup if you lose your sign-in details and are locked out of 1Password.
  • You’ll be able to use your recovery code to regain access to your account on 1Password.com.
  • You’ll be able to manage your recovery code through the 1Password apps.

When you use a recovery code:

  • You’ll need access to the email address associated with your 1Password account to verify it’s you.
  • You’ll receive a new Secret Key and create a new 1Password account password.
  • You’ll be able to access all the data you had before.
  • You’ll need to sign in again on all your devices once recovery is complete.
  • If you previously enabled two-factor authentication for your account, it will remain turned on.
  • Your recovery code will stay valid for future use.

Manage your recovery code

You can delete or replace your recovery code in the 1Password apps. If you use a passkey to unlock 1Password, you must always have a recovery code and will only see the option to replace a code.

If you delete your recovery code, you won’t be able to recover your account if you get locked out of your 1Password account.

Replacing a recovery code will invalidate your previous code and you’ll need to save a copy of your new recovery code.
