How to back up and restore data in 1Password 3 for iOS

You can manually create and restore backups of the 1Password data on your iOS device if you're using the 1Password 3 app.

Tip

If you have 1Password 4 or later, there’s an easier way for you to back up and restore.

Your computer and iOS device must be on the same Wi-Fi network to create or restore a backup. Connecting your device with a USB cable will not work. This process only works over Wi-Fi and only if both your devices are on the same Wi-Fi network.

Create a backup

Using 1Password 3 on your iOS device, you can back up your data to any computer using your web browser.

  1. Open and unlock 1Password on your iOS device.

  2. Tap Settings > Data[base] > Backup & Restore.

The Backup & Restore screen displays “Launch a browser from the computer on the same network and navigate to one of the following addresses:…” and then lists two addresses that you can access from your computer.

  3. In a web browser on your computer, enter the top address, and you’ll see a page with more instructions to “Download and keep this file for backup purposes”.

  4. Click the linked file to download it to your browser’s Downloads folder. You may want to store the backup file somewhere else that is both safe and memorable for when you need it in the future.

Restore a backup

These steps only apply to the backup files created in 1Password 3 for iOS by following the steps above.

  1. Open and unlock 1Password on your iOS device.
  2. Tap Settings > Data[base] > Backup & Restore.
  3. In a web browser on your computer, navigate to the address 1Password lists. It may be different from the address you used when you originally backed up your data.
  4. Click Choose File, then locate the backup file you previously saved.
  5. Click Restore to restore the backup to your device. 1Password will prompt you to accept the data being restored and will reload the database.
