1Password app

If you can't install, update, or use 1Password

If you can’t install, update, or use 1Password, and you use antivirus software, you may need to configure it to work with 1Password.

Before you add any of the files and folders below to your antivirus whitelist, update your antivirus software to get the latest signatures.

Tip

It’s recommended to whitelist files individually instead of adding rules for entire folders, where possible.

Add 1Password files and folders to your whitelist

App data:

  • Main directory: ~/Library/Group\ Containers/2BUA8C4S2C.com.1password/Library/Application\ Support/1Password
  • Local database:
    • ~/Library/Group\ Containers/2BUA8C4S2C.com.1password/Library/Application\ Support/1Password/Data/1password.sqlite
    • ~/Library/Group\ Containers/2BUA8C4S2C.com.1password/Library/Application\ Support/1Password/Data/1password.sqlite-wal
    • ~/Library/Group\ Containers/2BUA8C4S2C.com.1password/Library/Application\ Support/1Password/Data/1password.sqlite-shm
    • ~/Library/Group\ Containers/2BUA8C4S2C.com.1password/Library/Application\ Support/1Password/Data/1password_resources.sqlite
  • Settings file: ~/Library/Group\ Containers/2BUA8C4S2C.com.1password/Library/Application\ Support/1Password/Data/settings/settings.json

Other files:

  • App package: /Applications/1Password.app
  • Browser helper: ~/Library/Containers/2BUA8C4S2C.com.1password.browser-helper/
  • UI and UX: ~/Library/Application\ Support/1Password/

If you see “1Password was unable to complete installation and will roll back any changes”, your antivirus software may be preventing 1Password from installing or updating.

Learn what to do if you see “1Password couldn’t complete its update”.

App data:

  • Main directory: %LocalAppData%\1Password
  • Local database:
    • %LocalAppData%\1Password\1password.sqlite
    • %LocalAppData%\1Password\1password.sqlite-wal
    • %LocalAppData%\1Password\1password.sqlite-shm
    • %LocalAppData%\1Password\1password_resources.sqlite
  • Settings file: %LocalAppData%\1Password\settings.json

When 1Password updates, you may need to whitelist the following directories for the update to install properly:

  • %LocalAppData%\1Password\Update
  • %LocalAppData%\1Password\Previous

You may also need to whitelist these executable files:

  • %LocalAppData%\1Password\app\8\1Password.exe
  • %LocalAppData%\1Password\app\8\1Password-BrowserSupport.exe
  • %LocalAppData%\1Password\app\8\op-ssh-sign.exe
  • %LocalAppData%\1Password\app\8\1password-lastpass-exporter.exe

If you installed 1Password with the MSI, the executable files will be in the %ProgramFiles% folder instead of %LocalAppData%.

The following paths are for 1Password’s files and folders if you installed with a traditional package manager, such as apt-get, or directly downloaded the app from 1Password.com.
