If you see "We weren't able to connect to the 1Password extension in your browser" in 1Password for Mac

Get help when 1Password for Mac can't connect to 1Password in the browser.

About the message

1Password for Mac can connect with 1Password in the browser, so you can unlock both at the same time.

If you have “Connect with 1Password in the browser” turned on, but 1Password can’t connect to your browser, you’ll be asked to unlock in both places, and you’ll see an error message in 1Password for Mac.

We weren't able to connect to the 1Password extension in your browser

What you should do

If 1Password or your browser isn’t in the /Applications folder

If 1Password or your browser isn’t in the /Applications folder, move it there:

  1. In Finder, locate 1Password. Get help if you can’t find 1Password.
  2. Drag 1Password and your browser to the /Applications folder.

If you’re still having trouble, continue to the next section.

If 1Password and your browser are in the /Applications folder

If 1Password and your browser are in the /Applications folder, follow these steps:

  1. Open Terminal, which is in the /Applications/Utilities folder.

  2. Copy and paste the following command and press Return:

     /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -dump| grep '.*path.*1Password Browser Helper'
    
  3. After entering the command, compare what you see with the following:

     path:  /Applications/1Password.app/Contents/Library/LoginItems/1Password Browser Helper.app (0xxxxx)
    
  4. If the path is different from above, copy and paste the following command, then press Return:

     /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
    

1Password for Mac should now connect with 1Password in your browser. If it doesn’t, restart your Mac and try again.

Get more help

If you restart your Mac, and the 1Password app still can’t connect with 1Password in the browser, make sure the 1Password app has permission to perform tasks in the background.

If you’re still having trouble:

  1. Create a diagnostics report on your Mac.
  2. Contact 1Password Support with a description of the problem and attach the diagnostics report that you created.
