If you see “1Password couldn’t complete its update”

About the message

Some antivirus software can prevent 1Password from updating. If this happens, you’ll see a message that “1Password couldn’t complete its update”.

Learn what to do if you see “1Password was unable to complete installation and will roll back any changes”.

What you should do

If you use Malwarebytes

Update Malwarebytes and restart your PC, then try updating 1Password again.

If you use McAfee

McAfee blocks apps from using the temp folder by default. If you are updating from 1Password 7.3 or earlier, temporarily disable temp folder protection and try updating 1Password again.

If you use any third-party antivirus software

Make sure your antivirus software is up to date and has the latest definitions, then try updating 1Password again.

If you’re still having trouble, add your 1Password folder to the allow list or whitelist in your antivirus software. To find this folder and copy the filepath to your clipboard:

  1. Open File Explorer and enter %LOCALAPPDATA%\1Password in the address bar.

If 1Password was deployed to your PC using the MSI installer, enter %ProgramFiles%\1Password instead.

  2. Right-click the address bar in File Explorer and choose Copy address as text.

Check for Windows Updates

Pending Windows updates may prevent 1Password from updating. To allow 1Password to update, install all available Windows updates, including optional updates:

  1. Open Start, type “Windows Update” to search, and press Enter.
  2. Click Check for Updates.
  3. Install any available updates.
  4. Try updating 1Password again.

Check if your Local App Data folder is read-only

1Password won’t be able to update if your Local App Data folder is read-only. To make sure 1Password can complete its update:

  1. Right-click the 1Password icon in the notification area and select Exit.
  2. Open File Explorer and enter %LOCALAPPDATA% in the address bar.
  3. Go up one directory or click AppData in the address bar. You’ll see three folders: Local, LocalLow, and Roaming.
  4. Right-click the empty area below the three folders and select Properties.
  5. In the General tab, click the box next to Read-only so it is empty.
  6. Click Apply, then click OK.
  7. Try updating 1Password again.
