About the 1Password MSIX installer

Summary

In the near future, the MSIX installer for 1Password for Windows will be released. This new installer combines the benefits of our existing EXE and MSI installers, so you don’t have to choose between features previously exclusive to a single installer. The MSIX installer also offers several benefits over to the EXE installer, including support for Windows for ARM and improved installation protection.

A few months after the MSIX installer is released, the EXE installer will be deprecated and removed as an installer option. We recommend that all customers use the MSIX installer where possible. However, we’ll continue to support the MSI installer for customers who need it.

What to know

  • The MSIX installer will be available for download first on 1Password.com then later from the Microsoft Store.
    • If you want access to beta or nightly releases, or you want to use features like drag and drop, type in window, or Auto-Type to fill fields, you should use or deploy the MSIX installer found on 1Password.com.
  • The MSIX installer will require Windows 10 20H1 or later. If you use an earlier version of Windows 10, you should use the MSI installer instead.
  • If you want to update to the MSIX installer when it’s available, we recommend that you uninstall 1Password for Windows first, then reinstall it with the new installer.

If you used the EXE installer or the Microsoft Store

If you installed 1Password using the EXE installer or the Microsoft Store, and you have “Install updates automatically” turned on, you’ll need to switch to a supported installer depending on your version of Windows:

  • If you use Windows 10 20H1 or later, 1Password will automatically update to the MSIX installer later this year with no action required.
  • If you use Windows 10 19H2 or earlier, you’ll be prompted to update to the MSI installer later this year.

To install the update to the MSI installer, you’ll need administrator privileges for your PC.

If you deploy the MSI installer to your team

If you deploy 1Password to your team with the MSI installer, you can continue to do so, and you don’t have to switch to the MSIX installer unless you choose to.

Tip

As of 1Password for Windows 8.10.72, the MSI installer supports in-app updates, which are turned on by default. You can review the deployment options to see how you can control how the MSI installer is deployed.

If you deploy the EXE installer to your team

If you deploy 1Password to your team with the EXE installer, you should switch to the MSIX installer after it’s available in the near future.

If you deploy to computers running a version of Windows earlier than Windows 10 20H1, you can use the MSI installer instead.
