Change your passwords and make them stronger

Learn how to create strong passwords for all your online accounts.

Make sure your current password is saved in 1Password

Before you change a password, you’ll need to have your current password for the site saved in 1Password. Learn how to save passwords on your Mac, Windows PC, or iOS device.

Change your password

Step 1. Sign in to your account

Sign in to the website where you want to change your password, then find the “change password” page. On Facebook, for example, go to the Settings page in your profile.

If the website asks for your current password

Some websites ask you to enter your current password before you can change it. To enter your current password:

  1. Click the 1Password button in your browser’s toolbar.
  2. Hover over the Login item for the current site to reveal its details.
  3. Click the password to copy it.
  4. Paste the password where the website asks for your current password.

Step 2. Create your new password

To create a strong password:

  1. Click the 1Password button in your browser’s toolbar.
  2. Hover over Password Generator. If the website requires a certain password length, digits, or symbols, adjust the settings.
  3. Click Fill. Your password will be filled into the fields on the page.

Step 3. Save your new password

After your new password is filled in, save your changes:

  1. Finish changing your password on the website. On Facebook, for example, click “Save changes”. 1Password will automatically detect the new password.
  2. Click Update Existing.

Some websites ask you to enter your current password before you can change it. To enter your current password:

  1. Click the 1Password button in your browser’s toolbar.
  2. Right-click the Login item for the current site and click “password” to copy it.
  3. Paste the password where the website asks for your current password.

Step 2. Create your new password

To create a strong password:

  1. Click the 1Password button in your browser’s toolbar.
  2. Click Password Generator. If the website requires a certain password length, digits, or symbols, adjust the settings.
  3. Click Copy.
  4. Paste your password where the website asks for your new password.

Step 3. Save your new password

After your new password is filled in, save your changes:

  1. Finish changing your password on the website. On Facebook, for example, click “Save changes”. 1Password will automatically detect the new password.
  2. Click Update.

  1. Tap the Share icon, then tap 1Password.
  2. Tap the i icon for the current site, tap the password, then tap Copy.
  3. Tap to go back, then tap Cancel.
  4. Paste the password where the website asks for your current password.

Step 2. Create your new password

To create a strong password:

  1. Tap the Share icon, then tap 1Password.
  2. Tap the i icon for the current site, then tap Edit.
  3. Tap Generate New Password. If the website requires a certain password length, digits, or symbols, adjust the settings. Then tap Done. Your new password will be automatically copied.
  4. Paste the password where the website asks for your new password.

If the website asks for your current password

Some websites ask you to enter your current password before you can change it. To enter your current password:

  1. Tap the password field to bring up the keyboard.
  2. Tap the keyboard icon in the bottom right and choose the 1Password keyboard.
  3. Tap the 1Password icon next to the space bar and unlock 1Password.
  4. Tap to choose a login.

If automatic filling is enabled and available, 1Password will fill your password for you.

To manually fill your password, tap the password field, then tap Fill Password.

Step 2. Create your new password

To create a strong password:

  1. Open 1Password and tap the item with the password you’re changing.
  2. Tap Edit.
  3. Tap the key icon. If the website requires a certain password length, digits, or symbols, adjust the settings. Tap OK, then tap Save icon Save.
  4. Tap your new password, then tap Copy.
  5. Open your browser and paste the password where the website asks for your new password.
