How to set 1Password to lock automatically

You can change how often you need to unlock 1Password, like after your device sleeps or you close 1Password.

Change how often you need to unlock 1Password by managing your auto-lock settings. Your settings aren’t synced between devices, so you can use the ideal settings on each one.

Use your fingerprint to unlock 1Password on your MacBook Pro, iPhone, iPad, or Android device. Use Face ID to unlock 1Password on your iPhone X.

Manage your settings

To manage your auto-lock settings:

  1. Open and unlock 1Password.
  2. Choose 1Password > Preferences, then click the Security icon.

You’ll find these settings and options:

  • Lock on sleep: 1Password will lock when your Mac or display sleeps.
  • Lock when screen saver is activated: 1Password will lock when your screen saver is activated.
  • Lock when main window is closed: 1Password will lock when you close the main 1Password app.
  • Lock when fast user switching: 1Password will lock when you switch users on your Mac.
  • Lock after computer is idle: 1Password will lock when there’s no keyboard, mouse, or trackpad activity on your Mac for the specified number of minutes.

When 1Password automatically locks, the 1Password extension and 1Password mini also lock.

To manage your auto-lock settings:

  1. Open and unlock 1Password.
  2. Tap Settings > Security.

You’ll find these settings and options:

  • Lock on Exit: 1Password will lock when you leave the app or lock your device.
  • Auto-lock: 1Password will lock after the specified amount of time has elapsed.

When 1Password automatically locks, the 1Password extension also locks.

To manage your auto-lock settings:

  1. Open and unlock 1Password.
  2. Choose 1Password > Settings, then click Security.

You’ll find these settings and options:

  • Lock when computer is locked: 1Password will lock when Windows locks.
  • Lock after computer is idle: 1Password will lock when there’s no keyboard, mouse, or trackpad activity on your PC for the specified number of minutes.

When 1Password automatically locks, the 1Password extension and 1Password mini also lock.

  2. Tap to open the menu, then tap Settings and choose Security.

You’ll find these settings and options:

  • Lock on exit: 1Password will lock when you leave the app or lock your device.
  • Automatically lock: 1Password will lock after the specified amount of time has elapsed.

When 1Password automatically locks, the 1Password keyboard also locks.
